How Big Should Your Wine Cellar Be? Here's the Real Answer.
One of the first questions I hear from clients is: “How many bottles should my wine cellar hold?” My answer is always the same: More than you think.
Whether you're a seasoned collector or just getting serious about wine, your collection will grow. Fast. If you build only for what you have now, you're already behind.
The 1.5x Rule: Plan for Growth
At Wine Cellar Company, I recommend designing your cellar for at least 1.5x your current bottle count. That gives you room to grow into your collection without overcrowding or compromising bottle safety.
If you currently have 300 bottles, aim for 450. Have 600? Design for 900.
Most collectors start with a few cases of Champagne, Napa Cab, or Burgundy… and before they know it, they’re building verticals, hunting rare allocations, or joining clubs. A well-designed cellar encourages collecting — and protects it.
A Cellar That Grows with You
Designing for future growth doesn’t mean your cellar has to feel empty. We use expert design elements — label-forward racking, feature walls, mixed-depth storage, lighting tricks, and custom niches — to make a space look full and balanced at any stage.
We've created 800-bottle cellars that look thoughtfully curated with just 300 bottles in place. That's the difference between a basic build and a professional design.
Think About How You Use Wine, Not Just Store It
Do you entertain? Do you want a tasting space? Do you keep everyday bottles on hand alongside investment-grade wines? All of this matters.
The best cellars are built around lifestyle, not just numbers.
Build It Right the First Time
Retrofitting a cellar is expensive. Designing one with too little capacity is frustrating. The smartest move? Build for your passion — and let the space inspire it.
Whether you're designing a 200-bottle nook or a 2,000-bottle vault, we’d be honored to help you think through every bottle, every inch, and every phase of your collecting journey.
